Politico Playbook: Illinois is the resistance
“Bracing for impact: Illinois residents, especially in Chicago, have taken Trump at his word that he will kick off the “largest deportation program in American history.” The feds planned to start on Day 1 after the inauguration.

Tuesday came and went without any action. No one called the 800 number set up to connect people to legal counsel if they were approached by Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents.

Why the delay: Border czar Tom Homan has said officials have pivoted because information was leaked about raids starting this week. Homan had announced last month during a Chicago visit that he would start deportations here when Trump took office.

Also, Trump’s team has acknowledged in public statements that mass deportations are expensive and take time to roll out. The delay has allowed Chicago more time to inform people and employers of their rights should ICE agents come knocking. The city is also working with its agencies and departments making sure everyone knows how to handle an ICE visit.”
